Why is it important for clients to be aware of their body composition?

In the fitness industry it is very important for a client to know their body composition.  knowing their body composition is a good way for a client to make goals and prepare to meet those goals.  This can also let the personal trainer know how to make the workout to achieve the clients goals, as well as helping the clients become more motivated to do their best.  Knowing your body composition will give you a better sense of your overall health. It is also important for a client to know what their lean body mass (which is the fat-free tissue) compared to their fat mass.  This will establish an optimal weight for an individual.  To find out a clients body composition there a few different methods.  For example you can use height and weight, BMI, waist to hip ratio, skin fold measurements, bioelectrical impedance, hydrostatic weighing, and bod pod measurements.  Once you have used one of these methods you can then use Plethysmography to measure the change in size or shape of an organ or body part.  Plethysmography is considered superior to height, weight, and BMI measurements because plethysmography measures lean body mass and fat mass and takes that into consideration when showing body composition. Knowing your body composition is also important in knowing what diseases that you might be at risk for.  For example, clients with high amounts fat are at a higher risk for developing hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, coronary artery disease.  Knowing your body composition will help you get healthy and it will help you lower your chance of developing one of these diseases.

As A Fitness Professional What Role Do You Have In Promoting Strong Bones?

As a fitness professional we have a huge role in promoting strong bones.  When we are train a client it is important for the client to have strong bones.  We promote strong bones so that our clients will have a lesser change of getting osteoporosis.  Osteoporosis is a medical condition in which the bones become brittle and porous from loss of tissue, typically as a result of hormonal changes or deficiency of calcium.  Experts say that 1 in 4 men and 1 in 2 women over the age of 50 will have an osteoporosis related fracture in his or her lifetime.  As personal trainers it can be our job to work with these clients and help them preform safe and effective workouts.  It is important that before you train a client, they must go through a pre-workout assessment. This will ensure that your client is healthy and there is no major risk of injury.  If your client tells you that they have osteoporosis, then they must get a clearance to work out by their doctor.  Once they have clearance to workout, they you can design their workout to accommodate for the osteoporosis.  Weight bearing resistance training, flexibility, and balance are just three exercises that can be safely preformed by a client with osteoporosis. Walking as little as 3 to 5 miles per week can greatly build a persons bone health.  Along with promoting exercise for bone health, it is also good to promote healthy eating habits.  As a fitness professional, we should promote eating foods that contain at least 10% or more of the daily value of calcium.  Eating foods such as milk, yogurt, cheese and other dairy products will also strengthen your bones.

Customer Service and The Fitness Industry

Customer service is a major role in any successful industry.  To have a business you need to have customers.  The customers are the people that keep the business going financially.  In order to a successful business you must have happy and loyal customers.  You must exceed your customers’ wants and needs in order to make them happy and loyal.  If a company fails in this then they will most likely lose their customers business.  This is especially important in the fitness industry.  The fitness industry is usually a service based industry.  That means the success in customer service will determine the overall success of the company.  This is because most of the business is done with face to face interaction between the customers and the company.  It is extremely important for the employees in the fitness industry to have great customer service skills.  That means meeting and exceeding the customers’ expectations in a kind way.  It is important to make the customer feel like they had a pleasant experience while they were there, so that they will come back again. Having happy customer’s means that you will have loyal customers.  Good customer service is also knowing how to tell a customer no.  If you have to explain to them why they can’t do something or if they want something that is against the company’s policy, then you have to know how to tell them in the nicest way possible.  Explain it in a way that is easy to understand, but won’t make them mad.  Maybe offer them another option so that you can still keep them happy and keep their loyalty.

My Role in Hypertension Awareness and Education

Over the past week I have been completing this project and doing research on blood pressure and hypertension.  I have found that hypertension can be a major issue and you can’t always see the symptoms.  I have also found that what you are eating will contribute to your blood pressure.  To prevent getting hypertension, I would suggest watching what you eat closely.  You should stay away from foods that are high in sodium or cholesterol. Just because something is advertising as healthy, doesn’t mean that it is.  Most frozen or processed foods contain high amounts of sodium, which is not healthy.   Eating a diet that is high in sodium will most likely lead to hypertension.  Also because hypertension shows no symptoms, it is important to get your blood pressure checked on a regular basis.  That way if you are developing signs of hypertension, then you will notice it and you can seek the medical treatment that you need.

My first semester at FCC…

My first semester at FCC has been going great so far.  I love the class, teacher, and all the people in lab.  I find that most of the things that we do in class comes easy to me, so that a good thing.  As for the academics, well, they’re too bad. I am doing well in most of my classes, and there is only one that I am having trouble with.  Other than that class, I am loving it here at FCC! I have met so many new people and made so many new friends.  Coming to FCC has given me so many new opportunities.

Multi-Lab Zumba

I loved the mulit-lab Zumba class! I think that this Zumba class was a great, fun way to get people active.  I think that this got people, who wouldn’t do this kind of activity on a normal basis, active and moving.  It was a good way to get the school involved with some of what we do here in the Exercise Science program. I know that I have talked to some of my other friends that participated in the Zumba with us as well, and they really liked it too.  I think dancing to music is a good excuse to get active and get exercising!

What Makes A Person Successful?

I think it is impossible to define success, except for myself.  What makes a person successful will vary from person.  Some would say that it may be money or possessions.  I think that to be successful it would mean accomplishing your goals, achieving what you want to achieve and being proud of what you have done.  I would consider a person successful if they get the life that they truly want to have.  It’s being happy with everything you have done to get where you are now, whether that is being financially wealthy or just having a great family and a nice home.

My name is Hunter Gladman, and I am a part of the Exercise Science program at Fairfield Career Center.  I decided to join this program to get a good start into the career that I want to go into. After high school I would like to attend a college and get my degree to become a Physical Therapist.  I would then like to get enough credentials to become a Pediatric Physical Therapist, and that is what I would like to do for the rest of my career. I want to work with children and help them get back into the physical health that they need to be in.
